IRUN, CAPITAL CITY OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL CINEMA

The mayor of Irun, José Antonio Santano, accompanied by the director of Oiasso Roman Museum, Juanjo Jiménez, and the director of FICAB, Aizpea Goenaga, presented this year´s edition of the Bidasoa International Archaeology Film Festival. The 22nd edition of the event, taking place from 14 to 19 November, will boast some new features. To provide information about the contents of this edition, many of the protagonists attended the presentation. Among them were representatives of the Donostia-San Sebastián Aquarium, Tabakalera, Euskadi ONCE [National Association of the Blind], as well as Toki Alai, a school in Irun playing a special part in this year´s educational section.

"It is a unique film festival and a source of pride for the city to have an initiative which puts us on the map thanks to heritage and archaeology. In addition, this 22nd edition arrives at a time when we want to give a new boost to this great Roman museum with the rehabilitation of the thermae, which will be a significant milestone in Irun´s commitment to continue bringing its citizens closer to our past," stated the mayor.

To begin with, the jury, which in this edition will be chaired by the actress Itziar Ituño, was officially revealed this Monday. She will be accompanied by jury members Amaia Arranz, Doctor of Archaeobotany and specialist in Prehistory, Carlos Coros, anthropologist and Director of the Archaeological Museum of the Andes (Chile), Fernando Pérez, Director of Azkuna Zentroa [Bilbao Society and Contemporary Culture Centre] and Mertxe Urteaga, Doctor of archaeology and member of the Historical and Artistic Heritage Department of the Gipuzkoan Regional Government. Some of them will take part in the presentations and discussions which will be held after the screenings.

In addition, the renowned archaeologist Xabier Peñalver will attend the discussions held at 5 PM from Monday to Friday in the conference hall of Amaia KZ. This can be accessed from the side of the hall, from Aureliano López de Becerra street.

We will also welcome Javier Trueba, who will attend as a guest to present his latest film, El sueño de la vida eterna [Eternal Life Dream], on Wednesday 16 November at 7 PM in the Amaia KZ auditorium. This film, in collaboration with ONCE, is the selected documentary made available to people with visual impairment thanks to the AUDESC system. Those who wish to attend this film must download the Audesc application onto their mobiles beforehand, in order to gain access to the audio description of the film.

Educational Section

This year, the Educational Section will be reinforced by the ARK-MO initiative, where, thanks to the support of schools, young people emphasise the value of their area´s heritage by means of 5-minute-long short films which will be presented in the Education Section of the FICAB Festival. These short films will be followed by films chosen by the students and subtitled in Basque. Schools will also have access to the pedagogical project carried out by Ikertze concerning the film Arte Paleolito Argitara.

Another great new feature is the window devoted to Historical and Archaeological Memory, where two films on this subject will be screened on Saturday 19 at 11 AM. We will also continue to enjoy our collaboration with the Donostia-San Sebastián Aquarium, where films about underwater themes will be screened, with the presence of Mertxe Urteaga and Ander Arrese. The festival´s presence in San Sebastián will be doubled because this year we have a new collaborator: Tabakalera, which will host the educational session for students from the Donostialdea region.

Meanwhile, Bizinema Irun will collaborate with the festival again this year by decorating the Amaia KZ hall, and holding a thematic photocall, and will also enliven this edition´s prize-giving gala. The decorations can be enjoyed throughout the week of the festival and, with Prehistory and Ancient Egypt providing the themes. The closing film of the 22nd FICAB will be Monty Python´s interpretation of the Arthurian Middle Ages: Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

About thirty films

With regard to the competing films, 29 films have been selected for the 22nd edition, as well as 5 ARK-MO short films. From 14 to 19 November, there will be a total of 37 screenings, plus the closing film. Tickets for all sessions are free of charge, and are now available via the internet https://amaiakz.sacatuentrada.es/. The prizes to be distributed are as follows:

  • Festival Grand Prize: Prize 2,000 euros.
  • Special Audience Prize: Prize 1,000 euros.
  • Educational Section Prize: Prize 750 euros.
  • Arkeolan Prize for Scientific Dissemination: No financial prize.

The FICAB complete programme is now available and all information concerning the FICAB Festival is included in the websites www.irun.org and www.ficab.org. Once again, it will also be possible to watch all the films online during the festival via the platform https://tv.festhome.com/.

It is worth pointing out that this year´s poster, the work of Juantxo Tolosa, is an homage to the centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamun´s tomb. Lastly, once the festival has finished and thanks to the collaboration with the Arkeologi Museoa de Bizkaia [Archaeological Museum of Bizkaia], FICAB will visit Bilbao, where the four winning films in the 22nd edition will be screened on 23, 24, 29, and 30 November.

1Les_Champollion

On the morning of 14 September 1822, in a room under the roof in Paris, Jean-François Champollion finally reached his goal. The decoding of a last cartouche had just provided him with the missing elements. A thousand-year-old civilisation had found the word... It was the culmination of a quest lasting almost 30 years. Crazy with joy, he rushes into the arms of the man who was his mentor over the decades: his elder brother, Jacques-Joseph. History has only remembered the younger brother, yet the deciphering of the hieroglyphs was that of a duo: two brothers who believed in their destiny, and one by one pushed back the obstacles to finally succeed, where generations of researchers had given up.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the rescue of the Abu Simbel Temples by UNESCO, this film follows in the footsteps of the French and foreign missions that faced deserts and floods and managed to preserve some temples, although they had to leave others at the bottom of Lake Naser. Combining archives, stories and 3D animations, it brings to life the great adventure from Paris to the Nile which led to that spectacular rescue and gives us something to think about regarding heritage in danger today.

The Bou Ferrer shipwreck is a large Roman trading ship which sank off the Atlantic coast when travelling between Cádiz and Rome in the first century after Christ. It was discovered by accident in 1999, and since then there have been several scientific excavations, with surprising results. The boat was carrying 4,000 amphoras of fish sauce produced in Cádiz and a shipment of lead ingots from the mines of Sierra Morena.

Kheops. The immensity of the edifice fascinates and gives way to the most irrational explanations: aliens, secret societies, Atlanteans, etc. Most of these theories are based on the pure and simple negation of two centuries of scientific research. It is time to tell the real story, to expose the facts, to show them, to give the keys to engage the passion and the critical spirit of the audience.

The dancing satyr of Mazara del Vallo, a masterpiece of Greek bronze statuary, found in the depths of the Sicilian Channel. And the amazing discovery of the naval rostrums from the battle of the Egadi Islands, on the island of Levanzo, where the Romans defeated the Carthaginians, ending the First Punic War.

The Djehuty Project discovers and carries out digs at the necropolis of Luxor, ancient Thebes, the first funeral garden in Pharaonic Egypt. This Spanish scientific achievement provides the backbone to a documentary about beliefs, rituals, art and objects associated with another world in the country on the banks of the Nile four thousand years ago. The common principle is the exciting archaeological work that brings them back to life, combining diverse gazes to offer a complete vision of the dream of eternal life and, by this means, interesting aspects of the environment and daily life of ancient Egyptians.

8Arqueomania_Bajo_el_Mediterraneo

The waters of Portitxol Bay in Jávea, Alicante, are crystal clear and warm for most of the year. Its natural bays are a real safe haven. And they have been since the earliest days of Antiquity. An undersea expedition to one of its shipwrecks will provide proof. No one would guess that in Can Pastilla, in Mallorca, right near the shore, just 50 metres from where the waves break, a Roman ship is hiding its thousand year-old cargo from the from the view of tourists. The sea is the greatest archaeological site within our reach.

For more than a thousand years, the Talaiotic people raised stone monuments reflecting not only their way of life, but also their social organisation and their beliefs and rituals. An exceptional culture which bequeathed hundreds of monuments which today make up an essential laboratory for the study of prehistory in the Balearic Islands. The Menorca Consell Insular [Island Council] is backing this documentary to support the candidacy for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The mysterious ruins appeared in a Normandy forest. The first archaeological investigations, carried out in the 19th century, provided a glimpse of the presence of a monumental Roman sanctuary. At the beginning of the 21st century, while the sanctuary was plundered repeatedly, the archaeologist Etienne Mantel undertook new excavations. Confronted with the importance of the finds, Etienne had a feeling that the forest could really be hiding the remains of a lost Roman city. Spectacular discoveries followed, until he achieved the dream of many archaeologists: the revelation of the name of the lost city!

The Spanish Civil War followed by Franco’s regime has left a legacy of terror: tens of thousands of murdered civilians, buried anonymously and lost to oblivion. Not only were they denied the right to live but also the right to a dignified burial, the right to be remembered. Decades later, Spain has been left riddled with mass graves.  The grave known as Pico Reja is one of the largest mass graves in Europe. Located in the cemetery of Seville, it is estimated that more than 2000 civilian victims of Francoist repression are buried here. “Pico Reja” is not a history documentary, but rather a reconstruction of historical memory in an attempt to create a space for reflection, analyzing the past and the keys for understanding the present.
