The Bidasoa International Archaeological Film Festival (FICAB) successfully closed its twenty-fourth edition with a great public turnout. The festival, held from November 11 to 16, enjoyed an excellent atmosphere. Around 1,560 people attended the in-person screenings at the Ocine Mendibil cinemas and the Aquarium of Donostia-San Sebastián. The festival, surpassing last year´s attendance of 1,195, has recorded its best figures in the past six years. Online views also saw an increase; this year, 490 people enjoyed the online screenings, 30% more than last year´s 366 online viewers. These historic figures reflect the festival´s upward trend.

The cultural delegate of the Irun City Council, Nuria Alzaga, celebrated the news and emphasized that the success of this edition is due to a luxurious program that brought films with "great archaeological value" to the screen.

With almost twenty-five years of experience, the cultural delegate noted, "All these years have allowed us to gauge the real scope that FICAB can reach in terms of the number of films and audiences. Now, with our sights set on the twenty-fifth edition, we face the challenge of stabilizing these figures and continuing to work towards enhancing the audience experience."

This year, the Grand Jury Prize, awarded by the FICAB president, Antonio Pizzo, and members Itziar Vergara, Vanesa Fernández, Mattin Aiestaran, and Mertxe Urteaga, went to the film Liban, Les Secrets Du Royaume De Byblos directed by Philippe Aractingi, for its "quality and caliber, both in terms of the script and the narrative structure, as well as the images that accompany the content," the jury stated. Additionally, the jury highlighted the "bravery" of the director and his team for documenting one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in Lebanon, a country that is currently "facing a complicated political situation." This same film also won the Arkeolan Award for Scientific Dissemination for its "thorough research, which has allowed the reconstruction of a significant story about an ancient excavation in Germany."

Tierra X - Das Grab Der Schamanin directed by Christian Stiefenhofer received the EITB Award, which recognizes the promotion of gender perspectives, for its "contribution to transforming the historical narrative by highlighting the role of women and their contributions in ancient civilizations."

The Educational Section Award went to Diving in Aegean History directed by Stelios Apostolopoulus, for its ability to "teach in a didactic manner about the excavation work of the remains from different historical periods around the island of Kasos in Greece."

Jesús Carrera: el rojo de Hondarribia, directed by Aitor Baztarrika Oca, won the Special Audience Award after receiving a score of 9.67 out of 10. The organization notes that this year, the audience rated all the films positively, which "reaffirms the high level of the festival."

17:00. Tocas. The origins. Direction: Pascale Binant. Francia, 2023, 4 minutos. Language: Francés.

25_banner_Tocas_des_Origines

Serra da Capivara National Park, Northeast Brazil. Rock paintings abound on the walls of rock shelters, called "tocas". They are so numerous that they overwhelm us. Testimony of a forgotten memory, as frozen in a disappeared past, they tell us dumb stories. But which ones? What do they say? No doubt we will never know it. They nevertheless vibrate the strings of
our imagination.

17:00. OFFICIAL SECTION. HISTORY PILLS session. OCINE MENDIBIL. Irun. Presentation and discussion by Xabier Peñalver

17:05. Naachtun, the mayan kingdom revealed. Direction: Erreca, Jean Baptiste. Francia, 2023, 90 minutos. Language: Francés.

Naachtum

Archaeologists believed they had discovered most Mayan ruins, but Lidar, a new technology, has helped to reveal thousands of structures hidden beneath dense vegetation. The process particularly affected the city of Naachtun, where the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) team is now based. Despite the hostile environment, the researchers know where to explore. The results of these explorations could transform our understanding of this civilisation, revealing the secrets of this same decline a thousand years on.

17_banner_Empire_Inca

From their capital, Cuzco, located in the mountains of southern Peru, the Incas conquered, in just over 100 years, between the 15th and 16th centuries, a disproportionate
territory which extended from Ecuador to the Chile. This masterful civilization would, however, never have had writing… His story was therefore told to us
by his enemies: the Spanish conquistadors who invaded this Empire from 1532. But over the past 15 years, thanks to technical progress and increasingly numerous
research programs, a new history of the Inca Empire has emerged, revealing aspects unknown or poorly understood until then.

In this short documentary film we want to bring closer the life story of Benita Navacerrada, daughter of Facundo Navacerrada Perdiguero, founder of the UGT in San Sebastián de los Reyes in 1936, shot on the walls of the Colmenar Viejo cemetery on May 24, 1939, cemetery parish where currently the second phase of the exhumations of the graves of victims of Franco's repression has  begun, this being the exhumation of the first civil grave in the Community of Madrid and where Benita, 91 years old, waits patiently, day one day, his father appears.

12:25. The secrets of Lascaux men. Direction: Laville, Nathalie Direction: Jacques Plaisant. Francia, 2023, 52 Minutos. Language: Inglés.

lessecretsdeshommesdelascaux5_preview

21,000 years ago, men did not live in caves and hunt mammoths while wearing animal skins on their bare backs. They were skilled in shaving, sewing their own clothes, applying makeup, speaking a language, and living in small tent villages, just like we do today. At that time, while Britain was still experiencing its last ice age, southern Europe enjoyed a wave of warm weather, providing an abundance of food and shelter. In southern France, families of master artists created what is now considered the greatest work of prehistoric art – the Lascaux Cave. Who were these men and women?

17:00. Thorin, the last neanderthal. Direction: Cuissot, Pascal. Francia, 2024, 53 minutos. Language: Inglés.

22_banner_Thorin_le_dernier_Nandertalien

In the South of France, a fascinating archaeological investigation takes place in the Mandrin Cave. The archaeologist Ludovic Slimak discovered an exceptional number of fossils and flints attesting that Neanderthals occupied the site for more than 80,000 years. These remains also reveal the arrival of the first Homo sapiens, 54,000 years ago, in Western Europe. It seems that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens met here, on the banks of the Rhone river! Then the team digs out a Neanderthal specimen. A very rare discovery. Named Thorin, he belongs to one of the last Neanderthal lineages. These past 25 years diggings in the Grotte Mandrin, rewrite the scenario of the Neanderthals extinction and the way they were replaced by Sapiens. On these two major questions, the Grotte Mandrin sheds a new light.

In Touraine, an archaeological excavation program is underway in a largely unknown cave: the Roche-Cotard cave. This cavity, approximately 45 meters long, was discovered in 1912 and briefly excavated in the 1970s before being forgotten. Recently, a large-scale research program has been relaunched because this cave, perfectly preserved holds an enigma that archaeologists and prehistorians wish to solve. Strange markings, probably digital, have been identified at the back of the cave. Who made them? When do they date back to? And what could they mean?

20:05. The Place before me. Lithic workshops. Direction: Karla Nascimento. Brasil, 2024, 15 minutos. Language: Portugués.

Making_Of_Oficinas_liticas___Buraco_do_Padre_1___300_dpi

The Place Before Me is a television documentary series proposing the dissemination and therefore the appreciation of material and immaterial cultural heritage of the State of Paraná in southern Brazil. The intention is to persuade the viewer to think about the formation of space and the Brazilian people via the influence of different groups, including pre-colonial groups. In the episode "Lithic Workshops", we explore the archaeological sites where ancient human groups made their tools from rocks, to understand how these articles bear silent witness to our history and how we connect to the past.

When we think about Ancient Greece and Rome, the economic power of both cultures generally springs to mind. However, we never think about women when we think about that economic splendour. And why is that? This documentary is intended to answer this question and show that Greek and Roman women were an important part of the ancient economy.

Huellas_Pastoreo_Babia_Foto_1

Since 2017, a team from the Institute of Heritage Sciences of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has  been executing archaeological investigations in the region of Babia (León) to analyse the origin and development of grazing practices. Archaeological digs in several grazing settlements reveal the seasonal occupation of the highland pastures from recent prehistory. Over several millennia, different groups of humans put into practice diverse grazing strategies which have left their mark on this mountainous territory.

For decades, it was believed that the beginnings of art had emerged in Europe, 20,000 years ago in Lascaux, then 36,000 years in Chauvet… Recent research is shaking up our understanding of art. Prehistoric art is much richer than we thought. Sculpture, music, painting… the creativity of Sapiens demonstrates a very high level of aesthetic mastery and for much longer… The oldest paintings have been dated nearly 45,000 years ago! And not in Europe, on the other side of the world: in Indonesia! The film searches for the origin in art and shows how art is inseparable from Sapiens, from our humanity.

The caves on the islet of Sant'Eufemia, opposite the town of Vieste, hold a thousand-year-old secret: more than 200 rock inscriptions that tell forgotten stories. A precious heritage that from the Roman period to the contemporary age offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of sailors who plied the dangerous waters of the Adriatic. But this cave was not just a shrine; it was a
silent witness to centuries of life. Archaeological finds spanning nearly a thousand years of history emerge: ancient pottery, fragments of human bones. An extraordinary find that not only reveals a fragment of the history of this territory, but also invites us to reflect on the deep connection man has always had with the sea and its deities.

Following the fortuitous discovery in 2014 by a Turkish archaeologist of the foundations of a Byzantine basilica submerged in Lake Iznik, not far from Istanbul, an international team of French, Turkish, Swiss and American researchers is investigating in close collaboration with the team of Turkish archaeologists to try and retrace the history of this mysterious basilica. Why is it submerged? What tragic fate lurks at the bottom of this lake? What could the excavation of such an edifice reveal? There's a reason why these remains have aroused the passionate and enthusiastic interest of an entire international scientific team: its location, Iznik. This is the current Turkish name for the ancient Roman city of Nicaea.

Midnight at the Pradocastaño Dolmen is another way of talking about heritage, far removed from analytical language. We dive into an experience that invites us back to a mythical perception of the land that is closer, perhaps, to that of its ancient inhabitants. Since 2016, this place in the Sierra de Gata has been home to archaeologists and volunteers aiming to uncover layers of history. The Pradocastaño Archaeological Project initiative aims to boost the heritage development of Hernán Pérez (Cáceres). It unites science and social activism to keep the territory alive.

This grave was once discovered by the Nazis and misused for other purposes before fading into obscurity. Now, it is once again the focus of research. The woman harbors an extraordinary secret: she may have been a shaman. The film presents the latest scientific findings and follows a forensic search for clues that gradually pieces together the puzzle surrounding the shaman of Bad Dürrenberg.

Protected by its walls and pillars, the "Temple of Millions of Years" of Ramesses II –the Ramesseum– for long and luscious years was the focal point for a political, administrative, economic and religious power. It suffered its first mutilations at the end of the Ramesside era. For more than 30 years, Christian Leblanc and his team have been working on its exploration,
restoration and assessment with the aim of returning its identity and vocation. This 23rd dig campaign will permit the continuation of this important work, contribute new testimonies and a better understanding of the "mystery" of the tomb of Sehetepibre and that of the "magician" where, in 1896, James Edward Quibell discovered a box of magic papyrus and ivories…

11_banner_Artemis_le_temple_perdu The location of the sanctuary of Artemis at Amarynthos has long remained one of the last great archaeological enigmas of Greek antiquity. This vast Artemision is mentioned in several ancient texts, which even go so far as to specify the distance separating the sanctuary from the ancient city of Eretria. But despite the efforts of numerous scientific expeditions since the end of the 19th century, no trace of the sanctuary or its temple has ever been found, leaving the mystery unsolved. The film retraces a collective epic, rich in twists and turns, explores the captivating history of the ancient city of Eretria, and immerses us in the mystical atmosphere of the cult of Artemis, the powerful goddess of the hunt and protector of the wild world.

10_banner_A_Villa_dos_Centauros During archeological excavations conducted in the roman villae for centuries hidden from our view, and despite the small area excavated by archaeologist, the discoveries are surprising. An exceptional find, a rare Roman mosaic with four centaurs was discovered in a Roman Villa in Alcácer do Sal. One of the rare representations of a Centaur fight in the Roman Empire. This mosaic has its closest parallel, in another mosaic floor that decorated the Villa Adriana, built by Emperor Hadrian, in Tivoli, near Rome. The archaeological excavation identified a unique set of three mosaics, representing Centaurs, Dolphins and a Trident, which were part of the decoration of the Domus, the house of a wealthy Roman owner. In faraway Lusitania, many miles from Rome, it shows us how strongly Romanized the Portuguese territory was, how it was clearly in tune with the iconography of the entire empire. We can see here with this fabulous discovery of the centaur mosaic from Salacia, the degree of civilization, the degree of Romanization that existed there

From the outside, it looks like an austere fortress: two thousand metres of walls and towers atop a hill overlooking the city of Granada! Inside, it offers a setting unique in the world: the buildings constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries for the residence, exercise of power and leisure of the last of Spain's sultans. Faced with the threat of their demise, they chose to make their mark by pushing the refinements of their art to the limit. And by creating a series of fabulous palaces whose reflections flicker in the pools that crawl at their feet. The film tells the story of this paradise, its reasons, its secrets and its passage through time.

71Kn4JY3S0L_AC_UF8941000_QL80_ Based on Conan Doyle's characters and set deep in Victorian London, a young Sherlock Holmes has to solve the crimes of a mysterious hooded figure, with links to a neo-pagan sect of Ancient Egypt-worshippers. It was the first film to feature a character created entirely by computer in the photorealist style, that is, presenting it to the viewer as if it had been obtained by conventional shooting, thanks to George Lucas's company, Industrial Light and Magic.
