Around 3000 years ago the area around Lake Sanguinet in the Landes
region was populated by human settlements. These people had to leave
their places due to the rise in the water levels that gradually took
place during the first millennium B.C. Archaeologists have found around
thirty canoes in the lake with a timeline dating from the Bronze Age to
modern times. Through experimental archaeology they have been able to
reconstruct the dugout canoes from the Second Iron Age, which were made
by hollowing out a tree trunk, and the process of producing iron and
forging tools for building these boats.
