Jesús Carrera Olascoaga, General Secretary of the
Communist Party of Spain, was shot and buried in a
mass grave in the cemetery of Alcalá de Henares in
1945. A cloud of silence shrouded his memory, to the
extent that even his family was unaware of the role
he played in important historical moments such as
the civil war, the resistance in Nazified France and the
clandestine reorganisation of the PCE at the beginning of Franco's regime. Publicly, Carrera's existence
was not known until 2018, when his remains were exhumed and transferred to Hondarribia.
