The construction of a marina in Mazarrón (Murcia) in the eighties, led to significant changes in the dynamics of ocean currents that moved tons of sand from the seabed, revealing a Phoenician ship. Recently an ambitious intervention was made to check the condition of the wreck, protected since its discovery with a robust metal enclosure which has preserved it from the aggressions of the marine environment and from pillage.
In the first century AD, hundreds of amphorae holding the beloved garum made in Cádiz were travelling in a large sailing ship, probably bound for Rome. The ship was wrecked off the coast of Alicante, a long way off its open-sea course. In 2000, two marine enthusiasts discovered the remains of the wreck while diving opposite the town of Villajoyosa in Alicante. It is known by the name Bou Ferrer.
